Habeeb Ogunneye signs for Arsenal
We're pleased to announce the signing of talented young full-back Habeeb Ogunneye.
Habeeb joins us with experience from Manchester United and Newport County, as well as England's under-17s side.
"It feels great to be here, it's such a big club," Habeeb said after putting pen to paper on his Arsenal contract.
Born in Hackney, our new defender was drawn to a return to north London. "I've got family who live in Hackney, so it's literally a full-circle moment. It's fantastic [to have my family here]," he added.
It wasn't just his own family connections that made Arsenal the destination of choice for Habeeb.
The young full-back has been impressed by the number of academy players who have progressed to our first team, especially after seeing them involved in our Premier League title triumph last season.
"When I heard [Arsenal] were interested in me, I said to my agents it's a no-brainer. Seeing all the young players that are coming through as well, so I just wanted to come straight away.
"I just wanted to be part of that group, and win games together. It's good playing with good players, good defenders; it's only going to better you."
In addition to his academy experience at Manchester United, Habeeb has senior experience, having spent the first half of last season on loan at Newport County. The full-back scored for The Exiles and ultimately helped them fight off relegation.
"It was great, my first season in men's football, [learning about] the physicality, the recovery side, it was a great experience.
"I remember when I scored, it was like a moment of madness. I didn't really know what to do. The stadium erupted; that's the first time it's properly happened for me, being in a big stadium where the three points mean something."
With plenty of experience already in his career, Habeeb hopes to get off to a good start at Arsenal and take his game to the next level.
"[Now] I want to get better every day and we'll see what happens from there."
Everyone at Arsenal is delighted to welcome Habeeb to the club and looks forward to seeing him in action.
