Strangers rushed to help woman who died after being hit by taxi

A woman who was hit by a taxi on Aigburth Road was "immediately worked on" by strangers before she was rushed to hospital. Emergency services arrived at the scene at the pedestrian crossing near Fulwood Road in south Liverpool around 5.40pm after a woman was ht by a white Toyota Voxy private hire taxi on the carriageway travelling towards the city.

The ECHO was told how several strangers near the scene ran over to the woman, who landed on the grass verge in the middle of the road, where they performed CPR on her in the immediate aftermath. One woman, whose partner was at the scene when the incident happened, said: "The taxi hit her and it was left parked in the outside lane with the woman on the grass verge.

"I'm not sure how she got there, whether she was moved or that's where she landed. People ran over straight away and started working on her. The air ambulance was overhead but it was struggling to land, I think it had to land some distance away.

"The people were working on her until the ambulance arrived. The road didn't reopen until about 11pm. I don't know who was there helping except for one woman who lives round the corner [on Fulwood Road]."

The woman who was injured in the incident was rushed to hospital where she died from her injuries.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said the taxi driver, a 41-year-old man, stopped at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving whilst under the influence of drugs and is currently in custody.

After police arrived, a large cordon was put in place on the road, with several police vehicles in attendance.

An investigation is underway, with CCTV and witness enquiries underway in the area.

Detective Sergeant Andy Roper from our Matrix Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “First and foremost my thoughts and those of my team remain with woman’s family at this sad time.

"Road death causes devastation for all those involved and it is our absolute priority to get answers for her family.

“An investigation has been launched to ascertain the circumstance of this collision and we are following up a number of lines of enquiry including speaking to potential witnesses and examining CCTV in the area.

“Aigburth Road is a very busy road and we know at that time there would have been a large volume of vehicles including buses, taxis and delivery drivers, together with pedestrians, in the area.

"I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or was travelling in the area at the time with a dashcam fitted to their vehicle to make contact with our team so that we can check if it has captured anything which may provide answers surrounding this collision.

“Also, if you live in the area and have a CCTV system or Ring doorbell, I would be grateful if you could check your footage to see if you captured anything."
